Summary / Abstract

Title: A cross-cultural validation of a four-factor model of adolescent concerns: a confirmatory factor analysis based on a sample of Hong Kong Chinese adolescents

Synopsis: A sample of 585 (317 males; 268 females) adolescents of Chinese ethnic origin from Hong Kong (mean age=161 years) participated in the present study. Data on concerns as well as demographics were collected. Using confirmatory factor analytical techniques, a four-factor model of adolescent concerns was fitted to the data. The factors are: (1) Health and Drugs; (2) Future and Career; (3) Personal Self; and (4) Social Self. The overall fir of the model to the data was quite good. The adolescents identified school grades, career plans and future schooling as primary concerns with concerns about sexuality, substance use and dating ranking last. Discrepancies in the fit of the model are explained within a cross-cultural context.
