Summary / Abstract

Title: Differences in perceived parental care and protection and related psychological distress between British Asian and non-Asian adolescents

Synopsis: This paper reports results from a study of health and well-being among a representative sample of 824 adolescents aged 14 and 15 years from South Asian ( N = 331) and non-Asian (primarily Scottish) background ( N = 493) in Glasgow. A wide range of self-reported health and related measures including the Parental Bonding Instrument (PBI) was administered to the sample. The Parental Bonding Instrument is widely used to measure two dimensions of the parental bond: care and protection. The present paper aims to identify differences in perceptions of these types of parental bond among adolescent boys and girls from these two ethnic backgrounds and their associations with psychological distress. The findings show that British Asian adolescents perceived more parental protection than non-Asian adolescents. British Asian girls perceived less parental care than non-Asian girls. A higher level of perceived parental protection was associated with higher psychological distress, and a higher level of perceived parental care was associated with lower psychological distress. The findings are discussed within the theoretical framework of the parental bond as formulated by Parker (1989), and explained in terms of continuity and change in cultural perceptions and behaviour. Also discussed is the validity of this instrument for adolescent groups of British Asian and non-Asian background.
