Title: Treating adolescent sex offenders in secure conditions: the experience at Glenthorne Centre
Synopsis:
This paper examines the problems arising from the long-term treatment of sexually abusive adolescent boys in conditions of security. Over the last decade a number of such youngsters have been admitted to Glenthorne Centre, which has developed a management and treatment approach derived from social-learning theory. It is argued that if treatment is to be successful, consideration must be given to a variety of factors which hinder the treatment process. Four factors in particular are discussed at length: the number and severity of clinical and behavioural problems presented by this client group; resistance to treatment; the difficulty of generalizing behavioural change into community settings; and the problem of keeping staff motivated. Recognition is also given to the constraints imposed by the juvenile justice system in the form of inflexible sentencing, imposed at a time when prognosis and the response to treatment cannot be determined.
